# Robert of Chester

- id: robert-of-chester
- dates: fl. 1140s, Spain

The Englishman who finished the first Latin translation of al-Khwarizmi's algebra at Segovia in 1145. Whether he is the same man as Robert of Ketton, who had translated the Qur'an for Peter the Venerable two years earlier, is a live scholarly question; if so, one translator carried both the Qur'an and algebra into Latin.

## Crossings
